The OET (Tropical Studies Organization) is a non-profit conglomerate of more than 50 universities, high schools, and research institutes from all around the world. In the 60’s, scientists from American universities established work relationships with collegues from The University of Costa Rica with the intent of strengthening education and research in tropical biology. The great interest of both the U.S.A and Costa Rica, led to the creation of OET in 1963. OET was founded t promote education, research and the responsible usage of natural resources in the tropics. With that purpose in mind, OET offers intensive field courses for university students, post graduate students and for professionals in natural resources, tropical biology, and other fields of study. OET maintains research stations in three ecologically diverse ecosystems in Costa Rica. La Selva is one of three biological stations that belong to OET. La Selva encompasses 3.900 acres of very humid tropical forest both primary and altered. Its yearly precipitation averages 13ft (4m) distributed in regularly balanced manner throughout the year.
